Lincoln Center Adds Formell y Los Van Van to Midsummer Night Swing

Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing will feature five nights of incredible Latin music and social dance under the stars. Returning to Damrosch Park, New York City, from June 25–July 13, dancers can enjoy the sounds and steps of salsa, mambo, tango and more. Single event tickets and multi-evening passes are on sale now at MidsummerNightSwing.org. Social Dance Series Celebrates Latin Rhythms and Dance Over Five Nights With Performances by: The just-announced Cuban superstar band Formell y Los Van Van, Rare New York performance by Brazilian icon and “Queen of Forró” Elba Ramalho, Chulo Records’s Los Hacheros blend authentic salsa aesthetics with New York attitude, Classic salsa rhythms on the Fourth of July with renowned bandleader Bobby Valentín and his orchestra and Golden-age tango with Analía Goldberg’s Sextet, of Orquesta Color Tango. Tickets for individual events and passes can be purchased in advance at the David Geffen Hall Box Office or beginning at 5:30 pm on the night of the event at a box office in Damrosch Park. Lincoln Center announced the 30th season of Midsummer Night Swing, celebrating the rich diversity of New York City with a wide range of sounds and dance styles from Tuesday, June 25, to Saturday, July 13, 2019. Fifteen nights of outdoor dance lessons and performances under the stars—covering genres like swing, rhythm & blues, ballroom, tango, salsa, and forró—bring to life the timeless magic of summer in the city. Series Features 15 Nights of Social Dance with International Music Icons and Contemporary Rising Stars, including: Rare New York performance by Brazilian icon and “Queen of Forró” Elba Ramalho, Trumpeter Bria Skonberg returns leading a new iteration of the Sisterhood of Swing, now with seven incredible musicians, including vocalist Catherine Russell,A night of DiscoVogue with Escort, East Village icon DJ Lina, and MikeQ x Qween Beat celebrating WorldPride NYC, Chulo Records’ Los Hacheros blend authentic salsa aesthetics with New York attitude, Classic salsa rhythms on the Fourth of July with renowned bandleader Bobby Valentín and his orchestra, New Orleans Jazz with five-time Grammy nominee Maria Muldaur performing the songs of Blue Lu Barker, A new leader in contemporary swing, the Eyal Vilner Big Band, Rising star Charles Turner & Uptown Swing, playing hard-swinging standards and Return of Silent Discos, Dance Contest, and LC Kids Dance! Live music begins at 7:30 pm and lasts until 10:00 pm, except on June 27 and July 2 when Silent Disco extends the party until 11:30 pm. Admission includes a dance lesson for people of all skill levels, taught by some of New York’s foremost instructors. Joe’s brilliant big band sound is considered among the best ever.  He has performed for such dignitaries as Hilary Clinton, Rudy Giuliani, and Barbara Walters.  For over 20 years, Joe and his orchestra have performed regularly at The Rainbow Room, Tavern on the Green, Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing, and most recently, right here at the Edison Ballroom. Joe’s New York Big Band is composed of a 16-piece orchestra as well as accompanying vocalists.  Also featured at this event will be the romantic Latin sounds of Direct Latin Influence, also known as DLI.

SUMMER: The Donna Summer Musical on Broadway

SUMMER will open on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, 205 West 46th Street on April 23, 2018. The three actresses who will play the role of musical icon Donna Summer will be Tony Award winner LaChanze (The Color Purple, Once on This Island) as “Diva Donna,” Ariana DeBose (A Bronx Tale,Hamilton) as “Disco Donna” and Storm Lever (Freaky Friday) as “Duckling Donna.” SUMMER features a book by Colman Domingo, Robert Cary and Des McAnuff, with songs by Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder, Paul Jabara and others and will be directed by Des McAnuff and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, with music supervised by Ron Melrose. SUMMER is produced by Tommy Mottola and the Dodgers. She was a girl from Boston with a voice from heaven, who shot through the stars from gospel choir to dance floor diva. But what the world didn’t know was how Donna Summer risked it all to break through barriers, becoming the icon of an era, and the supreme queen for every diva who followed.
