Pilar Rioja’s Final Season in New York December 3-18

Repertorio Español is pleased to announce Pilar Rioja’s Winter Engagement. The two-week limited engagement will mark her 39th and final season in New York. Performances will be held at Repertorio Español’s Gramercy Arts Theater and will begin Saturday, December 3 and continue through Sunday, December 18. Pilar Rioja first debuted at Repertorio in 1973 and has since delighted tens of thousands with her vibrant, dramatic and fiery Flamenco and Spanish dance programs. As part of the program, Rioja will premiere a new flamenco dance titled “Carretero” performed to a type of song sung by oxcarters. “Carretero” highlights the influence of African and American rhythms on Spanish dance set to music by Cuban composer Guillermo Portabales. The program will also include some of Ms. Rioja’s most popular dances including “Bulerías,” “Jaleo,” “Farruca,” Boccherini’s “Fandango,” and “Habanera.”
