Dancing in the Park: 80th Anniversary of Harlem Jazz and Swing Dancing

On Friday August 7th, 2015, enjoy a great summer night to celebrate Harlem's jazz culture and Harlem’s signature cultural dance on the 80th Anniversary of Swing Dancing in the Park.

The Harlem Swing Dance Society (THSDS) and The New York Parks and Recreation will celebrate the 80th anniversary of Swing Dancing in “Colonial Park” (Jackie Robinson Park’s former name).  After the Harlem riot of March 1935 Mayor LaGuardia and the Parks Department sought ways to boost the morale of Harlem and the rest of the city.  At the first dance in mid in July 1935 10,000 people attended… and at the next dance 15,000!

This event will highlight Lindy Hop and Swing Dancing which was at its peak and heyday in the summer of 1935 – and also the need to revisit and revive this rich culture in Harlem where it began.

This special free community event includes a dance lesson, the renowned Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, a best dressed contest with prizes and a Swing Dance performance.  We welcome all to come uptown to swing with us.

The Harlem Swing Dance Society (THSDS) is a non profit organization dedicated to promoting, propagating and preserving Lindy Hop and Swing Dance culture in its Harlem home where it began. They offer dance classes, performances, workshops and more in Harlem and beyond. For general information visit their website at or call their hotline at 347 – 709 – 7022.
